I've not yet received a copy of The Curse of the Capable. I was indicated as a recipient of it through the LibraryThing Member Giveaway program (Nov. 12, 2009).
Hallo DocAPC
I have been advised that you would like to be my friend and I humbly accept. Just so that I should know - have you then read my book A BOY FROM NOWHERE?
I woid be very interested to know. With my new website (on www.davidjmitchell.co.uk) I intend to make an assault on both the US and Canadian markets
so wish me luck. Basically, mine is a book about a boy born to a poor family in the slums of the East London Docklands and how, despite the odds being very much against him, managed to fight poverty and become a success in life. The book is in two volumes and covers the period from the 1920s to the present day. It includes a description of London before the war, how we survived the Great Depression, the years leading up to the war, my experiences during the war, my service and honourable discharge from HM forces, how I took stock of myself and broke through to become a director of a City company, became UK Director of Sales & Markating for Czechoslovak confectionery products. This introduced me to communism and how this evil system affected the people of Czechoslovakia. Later I begin my own business from nothing and make a success of it,
I retired early and built a lovely villa in the sun and went to the Costa Blanca, Spain for 9 years wonderful holidays, returning to England to live out
our retirement - our years in Spain was a period of my life that I shall never, ever, forget. It is a book with nostalgia for a long lost old London, stories of the years leading up to the war, details of my own experiences during the war, how I served my National Service and then began to carve out some kind of future. I succeeded to do that successfuly and now I am happily retired the the lovely county of Devon.
